October Events 2026
Hello everyone!
We hope you all enjoyed Freshers Week, the committee certainly loved meeting some of you at our fresher’s fayre stall and at the taster event last week. In the background we have been working hard to bring a whole host of surgical events for all year groups. As we move away from Summer into Autumn now, I’m pleased to tell you more about what we have in store for the month of October.
Starting strong with the classic, much loved suturing series! This month we will be running both Beginner and Intermediate sessions. The Beginner series, consisting of 2 teaching sessions and 1 reinforcement session, will commence on the 1st of October and run weekly thereafter on the 8th and 15th of October. In our Beginner sessions you will start with the basics: learning hand-tying and simple interrupted sutures. These are essential skills you need to master before you can build on from there! No prior experience is required, and this is perfect for students in all years who are wanting to kickstart their surgical career and get a head start when it comes to preparing for placement. On the 22nd of October we will be running our Intermediate series. In this session and the next, on the 29th of October, students will begin to learn more complex suturing: Simple continuous, vertical and horizontal mattress, subcuticular, simple locking and the Aberdeen knot. Previous experience is required for these sessions, and they are reserved for those who are confident in simple sutures. All sessions will be held in the Suttie centre, and more information regarding timing and room location can be found on our instagram: @ogstonsurgicalsoc. Membership is required to attend and can be purchased online. Be sure to sign up ASAP as spaces fill up quickly!
The next event on the agenda is our teaching series! You asked and we listened, we’ll be starting with GI teaching geared towards the UKMLA, on the 5th of October held online via MS Teams. This will be taught by senior medical students who have already passed the exam and is excellent to refresh your knowledge and get some early revision. This will be paired with some GI anatomy teaching the following week on the 12th of October. Whether you are a senior student who needs their memory jogged or a 2nd year who has just completed the GI workbooks, there’s something in it for everyone! Similarly, we will also be hosting ENT anatomy teaching online on the evening of the 26th of October, so put your listening ears on!
As if that wasn't enough, the society is really starting the year off with a bang this first term and has arranged teaching with FY1s for you lucky ducks! These sessions will be focussed on surgical teaching, and how to do the job as an FY1 on a surgical ward. The first session will be taking place in the Suttie centre on the 13th of October. We will also be hosting an online webinar about getting into Core Surgical Training on the 28th of October. Thinking of applying but not sure where to start? Maybe you don’t know what the pathway entails? Join us online to learn what CST is and what exactly you need to apply. With the opportunity to pick the brains of a doctor who has been through the process and pick up some good tips and advice, this is sure to be a good one.
Finally, 3 events to keep an eye out for are our first ever Research Night (the first of many led by our amazing research lead), Joint Surgical Society evening in collaboration with THOR and APRASS, and Basic Surgical Skills event. More details to come out imminently so follow along, you won’t be disappointed! We hope you enjoy everything we have in store for you. The committee have outdone themselves and I think you’ll agree!
