"We would like to say a big thank you to the Royal College of Surgeons for inviting us down to London for the latest Future Surgeon's Forum!"

"The college held a great reception afterwards to give us a chance to network with presidents from surgical societies across the country so keep an eye out for some fresh ideas and events that we have heard about and can't wait to share with you all! "

"We had a lovely time exploring the city before attending the college ( and stumbling on the Royal College of Medicine!) The day was filled with incredible talks on the future of surgery and research from leading surgeons across the UK as well as amazing presentations from students and resident doctors. We were also really lucky to have Mr Ian Kamaly-Asl to show us some very exciting new headsets he is using to visualise patients scans before surgery!"

Ogston Surgical Society

On the 26th of September 2025, our Co-Presidents - Eleftheria Karouzaki and Alicja Lubinska, and Vice-President, Katherine Robertson attended the Travelling Surgical Society Conference that was hosted here at the University of Aberdeen. They were able to present some of the Ogston Surgical Societies work at the conference.

The Travelling Surgical Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded in 1924, and meets twice a year, once in the UK and once abroad, for educational and clinical exchanges between surgeons. This year, Ms. Aileen McKinley, the former clinical lead for the Ogston Surgical Society hosted the conference in Aberdeen.

As part of the conference, a visit to the world’s first full body scanner was included, along with a visit to the anatomy department, and to Sir. Alexander Ogston’s grave. Several fascinating talks were given by the members of the society, and lastly the talk by the Ogston's co-president’s and vice- president.

The talk was on the audit  “Improving Surgical Skills: an evaluation of beginner and intermediate suturing workshops” which was done in order to evaluate pre and post-effectiveness of the beginner and intermediate suturing workshops run by the society. The scope covered four workshops held in February and March 2024, with a focus of improving student satisfaction, self-confidence , skills acquisition and skills availability. Data collection tools included pre- and post event questionnaires, tutor feedback, and attendance lists. The audit identified a high student satisfaction, and a high positive increase in self-confidence improvement and skills acquisition. The audit highlighted areas of improvement such as increasing accessibility, time limitations, improving data collection and supplementing equipment. Moving forward, Ogston is keen to address these areas and ensure a better experience for future students.

In the evening, members of the committee, including Aurora Sonkin, Sasha Coutts and Amelia Faladay, were able to attend a formal dinner at the Sandman Signature Hotel  & Spa in Aberdeen, where they were able to meet with the President of the Travelling Surgical Society, and many of it's members. They all enjoyed it immensely, and further shows what opportunities can happen through the Ogston Surgical Society.

The Ogston Surgical Society at the University of Aberdeen is dedicated to promoting excellence in surgical education and practice. Our mission is to inspire the next generation of surgeons through networking, workshops, and mentorship opportunities.

On February 17th 2024, we hosted the second Ogston Surgical Society National Undergraduate Conference, which drew over 50 Undergraduates from across the UK.

Our day began with presentations from the following speakers:

  • Mr. Keith Buchan - Cardiothoracic Surgery

  • Mr. Muhammad Salik - Urology Speciality Trainee

  • Ms. Aileen McKinley - General Surgery (Colorectal Surgery)

  • Ms. Justine Royale - Urology

After the engaging talks from our surgeons, we organized practical stations where students were able to practice suturing on kits and more intermediate suturing on bananas to simulate human skin. Participants also practiced cyst removal using washing capsules and sponges.  Additionally, students had the opportunity to use the laparoscopic kits to experience the feel of robotic surgery.

We concluded the day with a Q&A panel, allowing students to speak to various surgeons and resident doctors, for advice about applying to surgical training, and further insight into life as a trainee.

Feedback from the conference included:

  • "Event exceeded expectations, very enjoyable and good pizza."

  • "It was better than an event I went to at the Royal Society of Medicine."

  • "The balance of skills and talks was perfect."

We look forward to seeing the next Ogston Surgical Society National Conference in 2026. The date will be confirmed soon.

Aberdeen National Undergraduate Surgical Conference

Our latest national undergraduate conference took place on Saturday 7th March 2020. The theme for this conference was a day in the life of a surgeon, with insightful, inspiring and motivating talks from six consultants across the surgical subspecialties. Our keynote speaker, Mr Yew-Wei Tan, a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon based at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, was both an Aberdeen MBChB graduate and a former Ogston president! With over 70 delegates, from across the country, undergraduate surgical interest was at an all time high.

Our day started with talks from the following speakers:

Mr Yew-Wei Tan - Paediatric Surgery

Mr Keith Buchan - Cardiothoracic Surgery

Ms Aileen McKinley - General Surgery (Colorectal)

Prof. Kim Ah-See - ENT and Head and Neck Surgery

Mr Santosh Baliga - Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery (Spine)

Mr Anastasios Giamouriadis - Neurological Surgery

Following our fascinating morning talks, delegates took part in three surgical skills workshops, comprised of suturing, cyst excision and a specialist ENT station involving nasal packing and endotracheal tube placement.

We finished the day with a Q&A panel, with four junior doctors at various stages of the surgical training pathway, from FY2 to Consultant, giving us their insight into the life of a surgical trainee and tips and tricks for applying.

Overall, a fantastic event was held and we all look forward to the next National Undergraduate Surgical Conference in 2021 (TBC).
