Mid-Term Review

Hello everyone,

The Autumn Term is truly underway now, and we are almost halfway through! For those who are new at Aberdeen- welcome ! We hope that you are settling in well in the city. Halfway through the term , and I have personally just finished with midterms, and we wanted to reflect on some of the events that have already happened, and give people an update about what is coming next !

Our suturing series is back and bigger than ever ! We have ran two beginner events, and we have an advanced event with APRASS on the 11/11/25 coming up. Spaces are limited for that, and include a guest surgeon, so if you are interested please sign up . We also have the intermediate suturing sessions on the 18th and 25th of November, and the sign up forms shall be sent out here, on instagram and in year chats soon ! Keep your eyes peeled, as spaces are capped, and we want as many people to enjoy these sessions.

Our teaching series, led by senior year medical students who have passed the UKMLA has come back. So far this year we have covered in GI - acute abdominal presentations, inflammatory bowel disease and biliary and pancreatic disorders. In head neck we have covered several high yield topics such as epiglottitis, tonsilitis and acute red eye. We have four more sessions this term:

  • 13/11/25 Head &Neck Part 2

  • 20/11/25 Neurology Part 1

  • 27/11/25 Neurology Part 2

  • 02/12/25 Reproductive Anatomy

These are also key and high yield for students in years 2 and 3, who will be undertaking medicine and anatomy exams before Christmas! Sign up links will be out shortly, again on here, on instagram and year group chats.

Also, as a new and exciting part of our teaching series, we have teaching for FY1

delivered by Dr. Kellie McClafferty and Dr. Rollo Press, who are currently in FY2 and FY1 respectively. This is key for students in their final years, and the sessions are on the 10/11/25 ( Orthopaedic surgery and analgesia prescribing), and 17/11/25 (ENT and perfecting the handover). Sign up link is on our instagram, on the website and in the year chats, so stay tuned.

Ogston have also helped out at the HEAT Conference on the 25/10/25, and adapted surgery to be done in the tropics, and tie in to tropical medicine. Hopefully we can come back if it is run again next year!

On a final note, we will not be running the Royal College of Surgeons Key Skills this term, but please keep your eyes peeled for the event next term, and several other key exciting events.

If anyone has any questions, please let us know!

Best wishes,

Katherine

Ogston's Vice-President 2025/2026
